Recently, I had the opportunity to interview indie rock band, Future Thieves. The Nashville group consists of members Elliot Collett (vocals, guitars, keys), Gianni Gibson (drums), Nick Goss (bass, keys, bgvs), and Austin McCool (guitars).
Check out our interview below to see what the band had to say!
How did you come up with the band name?
Elliot: I came up with it out in LA when I was recording some stuff prior to the band really forming. Thought it sounded cool.
You guys have been featured on Jimmy Fallon’s Tumblr page as well Conan O’Brien’s TeamCOCO.com. How great of a feeling is it to be featured on these big-name hosts platforms?
Nick: We have a terrific PR team who champions us everywhere we go. After our video and songs were mentioned in those pages as well as Billboard and others, we started to realize that we can really spread the music fast…about as fast as we can make it. So, it feels inspiring to know people will hear it if we make it.
What are some of the things that inspire the songs that you write?
Gianni: When we are writing new material, we are taking inspiration from everything around us. May it be from another song, film, novel or even as simple and hearing a clever phrase out and about on errands. We come together with the musical ideas and that is where the magic happens.
Your second album, which is a follow-up to your first album Horizon Line, is slated to be released sometime in the early half of this year. Is there a release date yet?
Austin: No release date just yet…working all that out now and it will be sooner rather than later.
“Sucker” was released last year and it is supposed to be an indication of the music that is to come. Were you looking to take a different route and experiment with your sound for the upcoming album or try to keep some elements to stay true to the bands roots?
Elliot: The band will always play whatever we feel like hearing and recording. “Sucker” was simply a more mature, focused effort that allowed us to explore more synth sounds and a smoother execution. Working with our producer Alex Jarvis has helped us open up to more possibilities as well. We will always be evolving.
You have played some big festivals like Summerfest, Bonnaroo, and SXSW among others. Is there any festival that has been your favorite to play?
Nick: I really loved Forecastle because I was born and raised in Louisville. We all had the time of our lives in Murcia, Spain this past spring playing the WAM! festival. Such a treat.
What has been your favorite city that you have played on tour?
Gianni: My personal favorite city would have to be Barcelona. We had the privilege to tour 8 countries in Europe last summer and it was truly a special time. The food, sights and friends in Barcelona alone made the trip fantastic.
Who are your musical influences?
Austin: We listen to just about everything. Drake, Portugal. The Man, Chromeo, Death Cab for Cutie. Really anyone who is making interesting, catchy music. We absorb a lot of different sounds.
What is your favorite song to play live?
Elliot: “Nightmares” is always fun because it’s a bit of a trip in the breakdown, but we like seeing people sing along to “Sucker” and “Horizon Line”, of course.
What is the best advice you have received as a band?
Nick: No one really gives us too much advice, it’s always a lot of teamwork with our manager to push into the right direction. At the same time, with social media how it is, you can see bands operate and make moves. But I’ve always kept it in my head that no artist just stumbled into success and continued success. It takes a lot of work and love for the product and people around you.
What do you want people to take away from your band/music?
Gianni: It’s quite a hectic time in the world, and I feel like we as musicians and entertainers have the ability to provide a positive presence and atmosphere at our shows for everyone and anyone to enjoy. To have it spread farther that we could have ever thought possible.
