The portion of the Saint Xavier community that receives MAP funding will be given some relief for those funds that up until now had been entirely missing. The state of Illinois has allocated $170 million for all MAP recipients. These funds will be used to cover the funds that were not provided for the 2015 fall semester.
In an email to staff, faculty and students who receive the MAP grant, President Christine Wiseman issued the following statement: “While these funds do not cover the spring 2016 semester, this is an important step in the right direction to keep you on track with your education.
We will keep advocating for the release of MAP funds for the spring 2016 semester and are hopeful that the legislature will see fit to do that as well. Furthermore, this action by the legislature and the governor provides a hopeful outlook for 2016-17.”
The office of Governor Bruce Rauner offered the following statement on the situation: “This legislation doesn’t solve our budget crisis or help our economy grow, but it does represent a first step toward compromise between Democrats and Republicans. Now is the time to build on this bipartisan momentum and focus on enacting a truly balanced budget for Fiscal Years 2016-2017 alongside meaningful reforms that create jobs and free up resources for education, social services and infrastructure.”
If you are a student who receives MAP funding, set up a meeting with Financial Aid to find out how these recently allocated funds may affect any plans that you have set up for yourself. The office of the president is still encouraging students to register for summer classes as well as classes for the upcoming fall semester.
