On Friday, February 1t, the Saint Xavier men’s volleyball team fell to both Cardinal Stritch University and Robert Morris University during a Tri-Match.
The Cougars put up a fight in both matches, losing in four sets. Against Cardinal Stritch the men posted scores of 21-25, 21-25, 25-22, and 16-25. The scores against Robert Morris were 31-29, 23-25, 21-25 and 19-25.
Sam Kull, a freshman middle blocker, continued his impressive collegiate debut. Kull led the team in combined kills between both matches, finishing the night with 20. He also added six service aces to the offensive effort and 11 total blocks on the defensive ends of the matches.
Junior outside hitter Justin Cousin was consistent for the Cougars, finishing the night with a combined 18 kills while his teammate, Sean Blackwood, posted 17 between both matches. Cousin and Blackwood also added to the team’s defense, finishing with 11 and 16 digs, respectively.
Sophomore Dan French continued to shine as the setter for the Cougars on Friday night. French totaled an impressive 68 assists throughout the night and also added 17 digs and eight total blocks to the defensive effort.
With these two matches, the Cougars season record falls to 0-7. The men will look for their first win of the season when they take on Saint Ambrose University on February 8th at Palos Courts in Palos Heights, Il. Saint Ambrose qualified for the national championship last year but ultimately lost in four sets to Park University.
