The Saint Xavier men’s soccer team continued its competitive streak in conference against Trinity Christian College and Calumet College of St. Joseph last week. The Cougars improved their record to 4-3-3 in the CCAC after a win and an overtime draw.
On Wednesday, October 19, Saint Xavier hosted the Trolls of Trinity Christian at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field. A strong performance in net by junior goalie Frank Valle and a Jaime Alonso goal proved to be the difference in the contest.
In the 26th minute, sophomore Danny Lopez set up Jaime Alonso on a counter attack. Alonso took a deep shot from about 25-yards out that beat the Trinity keeper and put Saint Xavier ahead 1-0 early.
Both defenses played admirably, as the Cougars totaled seven shots, while Trinity managed nine. Five saves for Saint Xavier goalie Frank Valle was enough for his second straight shutout and fifth on the season.
The Cougars looked to take their momentum on the road against Calumet College of St. Joseph on Saturday, October 22. The Crimson Wave are 3-12-1 (1-8-1) on the season, but Saint Xavier could not create enough offense to seal a victory against a bottom three CCAC opponent.
Again, it was junior goalie Frank Valle stealing the spotlight for the Cougars. Eight saves in a 110-minute overtime match earned Saint Xavier a 0-0 draw against Calumet Saint Joseph.
For the Cougars, offensive chances were few, but sophomore Elliot Kettle led his team with three of Saint Xavier’s five shots on goal. Senior Farai Tsingano accounted for the remaining two.
The men have two games remaining on the 2016 season and hope to finish on a high note. First up will be Olivet Nazarene University for their final home contest on Tuesday, October 25 at 7:00 PM.
