Just a tournament ago, it seemed like the Men’s Golf team finally seemed to hit their stride. Placing 4 out of 7 other teams and posting a score of 629(the team’s best score of the season), it seemed as though the men were finally ready to enjoy the same success as the Women’s Golf team.
However, this success was short-lived as the men suffered a loss at the most recent tournament hosted by Cardinal Stritch University at Deer Park Country Club in Oglesby, Illinois.
This two-day tournament included teams such as: Cardinal Stritch, Purdue Calument, St. Ambrose, Holy Cross, Indiana Wesleyan, Lindenwood-Bellville, University of Cumberlands, Roosevelt University, Campbellsville, Lindsey Wilson, Mount Mercy University, Cumberland University, Trinity Christian University, Indian Hills CC, and Saint Xavier University.
Over the course of three rounds, the Cougars scored 305 the first round on Monday, and scored 303 and 288 the second and third round on Tuesday. Overall, the Cougars finished with a score of 838, a score that placed the team in 13 out of 15 total teams.
Looking at individual performances, Junior Kyle Yaeger had a good showing as he lead the Cougars. At the tournament, Yaeger posted scores of 77, 73, and 70 over the course of three rounds that gave him the total score of 220.
This score was good enough to place Yaeger in a tie for 38 place. Also doing some impressive work for the team was Freshman Tyler Pennington and Junior Dan Kallianis, who both placed in 50 place.
Pennigton had scores of 76, 76, and 71 for a total score of 223, while Kallaianis scores were 77, 75, and 71 for a total of 223 as well. Freshman Christian Thornton wasn’t too far off as he posted a total score of 224(75, 77, and 72) that settled him at 56 place out of 98 total golfers.
Sophomore Michael Perez and Sophomore Jeff Stevens tied for 68 place. Perez scored 77, 77, and 75 over the course of the three rounds to give him a total of 229. Stevens had scores of 75, 79, and 75 to give him a total of 229 as well.
The men’s golf team is really having trouble finding any kinds of consistent success in the tournaments. They have yet to impressively perform at a tournament. While 4 out of 7 teams is respectable, it is still not the result the team was probably looking for.
Whatever the reason, the men are looking into the future at a tournament on Ocotber 5 – the Troll Classic hosted by Trinity Christian College – and at the NAIA National Preview, taking place on October 19-20.
Let’s continue to support both our Men’s and Women’s Cougar golf teams, and hope for their further success as the season wears on. You can check The Xavierite for all of your sports news and updates.
