It was the first game of the season for the Cougars men’s basketball team and they went up against Grace College in a home opener. Emotions and feelings of excitement were in the air for this one. But one team would leave this game filled with hope for the rest of the season, while the other left rattled from their first lost.
Despite opening the season in front of the best fans in sports, SXU was still unable to obtain victory in this one as they fell to Grace college, 89-82. SXU started the first half hot as they scored 51 points and hit 9 of their 14 three point attempts. Unfortunately, this hot shooting didn’t translate to the second half. SXU shot below 40% from the field, while Grace shot 47% from the field, and hit 6 of their 9 three point attempts.
Although they lost the game, SXU has a lot to look forward to this game. First off, Freshman Jack Brody. The freshman played 39 minutes and scored 20 points on 58% shooting from the field. A solid night especially for a freshman player who still has a lot to learn at this level of play. Next, junior Quinn Niego. Niego’s game continues to flourish with each passing year. In this game, he had 22 points and 6 assists in 38 minutes of play. A really solid start in what should be an exciting year for him.
The Cougars return to action this weekend as they compete in the Indiana University-East Red Wolf Classic.
