The men’s basketball team opened its season Oct. 31 at Fultz Memorial Gymnasium.

The Cougars traveled to Phoenix, Ariz., to play Arizona Christian University at 9:30 p.m. central time.

The Cougars ranked No. 23 prior to the beginning of this season.

Unfortunately, the Cougars lost 103-86 to the Arizona Christian Firestorm, who were ranked at No. 17. SXU lost to Arizona Christian 83-76 when they played them last season.

Senior guard Jack Krieger contributed the most for the Cougars, scoring 21 points.

Arizona Christian made 16 out of their 24 shots from three-point range.

The Firestorm pulled away early in the game, taking an 18-5 lead. The closest the Cougars got to the Firestorm in terms of scoring was six points, but Arizona Christian’s shooting was just too strong.

SXU’s junior guard Stanley Moore followed Krieger with 16 points and 7-for-12 shooting from the floor.

Andre Arrington, a senior forward, and junior forward Mitch Uratchko each scored nine points.

Larry Motuzis, a freshman guard, also posted nine points for SXU. Collectively, the Cougars shot 48 percent (31-for-64) from the field.

The Cougars’ current record stands at 0-1, but they will have the chance to redeem themselves on Friday in a road exhibition game against National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Oakland University (Michigan).

The game, which will take place in Rochester, Michigan, will begin at 6 p.m. central time at the Athletics Center O’rena.

Saint Xavier’s first home game will take place on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Cougars will take on Silver Lake College’s Lakers on Bob Hallberg Court in the Shannon Center.

The Cougars have defeated the Lakers in every game they have played them since 2008.
