The Saint Xavier women’s soccer team is gearing for the CCAC tournament after completing their fill of regular season games for the 2016 season. The Cougars finished 5-12-1 overall, but performed well in conference by going 5-7.
The women’s efforts on the year resulted in a number 8 seeding in the single-elimination tournament that begins Saturday, November 5.
Saint Xavier hopes to get continued production from their seniors once the conference tournament gets under way. Seniors Christina Sperando, Brittany Kroening, and Julia Gawlak lead the Cougars in goals, while goalie Alex Perry worked for five shutouts on the season.
As for the men, the Cougars finished their regular season with a win against Robert Morris University on the road. A goal and an assist by sophomore Danny Lopez helped lead Saint Xavier to a hard fought 2-1 victory, which improved their record to 5-10-3 overall and 5-4-3 in the CCAC.
The Cougars battled all season and overcame a rough 0-6-2 start to earn a number six seed in the conference tournament. The eight team, single-elimination tournament starts Friday, November 4.
Lopez leads his team with five goals, four assists, and 13 total points on the 2016 campaign. Senior Kamil Szczesniak is second with four goals on the year.
Junior goalkeeper Frank Valle played every minute of the rigorous 18 game schedule and recorded six shutouts to his credit.
