It’s Hispanic heritage month and we are excited for the different events coming up that SXU has in store for the students to learn, connect with new people and enjoy themselves and have a good time. We are happy to say that the students of SXU have the opportunity to come out and have a chat while eating pizza with Julie Veloz this Sunday September 25th at 4:30pm in the Regina Hall ResCenter where she will present a “Labels Workshop.” Also on Monday September 26th in the Warde Academic student lounge Ms.Veloz will have another lunch and chat as she tells you a little bit more about herself. She will share with the students where she came from and different struggles that she has faced in order to reach her current success. Julie Veloz is a Global Learning and Development Executive with a bloodline in sales. She is the current Vice President for learning and development at IPG Mediabrands in NYC. She also earned her BA in Communications/Political Science from Rider University. These are just a few of Ms.Veloz successes.
As I spoke with Alexa Zaharris, the assistant Director of Class Programs in Students Life she stated, “It is important during heritage month to have someone of that heritage that you can reach out to and learn from. You can see their successes and struggles and connect with them one on one. You get the opportunity to ask them what is their story and how did they get to the place that they are in now.” We couldn’t agree with Alexa anymore. We also got the chance to ask Dr. Campbell, Vice President of student affairs how he thinks this workshop will be beneficial to any hispanic students, he stated, “Ms.Veloz’s interactive workshop will encourage students to believe in themselves and shed any personal labels that are holding them back. Her inspirational workshop will help students create a sense of personal agency and belief that will encourage students to “Dream Big” and take advantage of opportunities to succeed. As a person of Dominican heritage, Ms. Veloz is excited to be part of Hispanic Heritage month and to meet the students at SXU.”
Elaborating on Alexa and Dr. Campbell’s statements it is important for the students of SXU to wake up, get out and connect with others one and one. This is a great opportunity to make new friends, receive great advice on any situation that ails you and chat amongst others within your heritage. This month is Hispanic heritage month and Ms.Veloz will be more than thankful to sit down, eat pizza, chat with anyone who is willing to have a conversation and ask questions about her heritage and how she made it thus far in her career field. Don’t miss out on a good opportunity. Come on out and enjoy a good time with Ms.Veloz and receive some helpful information that could help you in the near future.
