Interim head coach, Sidney Lovitsch Sidney Lovitsch
Saint Xavier University has named Sidney Lovitsch as the interim head coach of the women’s basketball team for the 2023-24 season. Lovitsch takes over after Travis Brewster, former head coach, accepted a head coaching position at Chadron State College.
Lovitsch played for the SXU women’s basketball team from 2017-2022 and became a member of the coaching staff last season as an assistant coach.
Although not far removed from her playing career, she has high expectations for herself and the team and knows they are achievable because of the roster she has to work with.
Lovitsch has high praise for her team, saying “As a coach, I want a team full of good people who are willing to work hard to achieve their goal, and I have that.”
Even with a more than capable roster, a team can only be as good as their coach is. Lovitsch added she has to practice what she preaches in order to promote the development and growth of the players both on and off the court.
In this first season of head coaching, Lovitsch’s goals for the team are to keep everyone on the same page and play together. She put an emphasis on everyone having the “want to play and be successful for each other” because they are “one.”
In addition to her goals for the team, there are personal targets to hit during the season. Lovitsch said she wants to continue fostering strong relationships with her players but to continue learning and adapting as the season progresses.
She also mentioned wanting to “build off of this already prestigious program,” that was built by Chicago basketball legend Coach Bob Hallberg and continue his legacy.
Taking over the head coaching position at a university before you turn 25 comes with a lot of added pressure, but there is a feeling of preparedness and a natural ability with Lovitsch in a coaching position.
Lovitsch said being in leadership positions on teams she played for and her father, who coached her and still coaches, were big reasons why she got into coaching so soon after playing.
“Watching my dad coach me and coach others, I saw that same passion that I feel when I coach now. It’s awesome.”
Staying at Saint Xavier was virtually a no-brainer for Lovitsch, as she wanted to give back to the players and offer them the same experiences she received.
Lovitsch continued by saying, “SXU is a special place with special people” and is “beyond blessed to be in the position I am in.”
