Live-Action Anime Finally Done Right: One Piece Season 2

Posted on March 26, 2026

One Piece Season Two Official Poster     Netflix

“One Piece” is my favorite piece of media to ever exist. It has had an unimaginable impact on my life, so much so that I’m writing my senior paper on it.

I wouldn’t be who I am today had I not begun watching during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Seemingly a simple story about pirates fighting marines, deep down it is a journey unlike any other which touches on countless political themes from our own world.

In all honesty, I am wholeheartedly confident in saying it is the single greatest piece of fiction to ever be written, but that’s quite subjective and an argument for another time.

Because of my clearly strong opinions regarding the anime/manga, I was understandably wary when a live-action adaptation was announced.

Anyone who watches anime knows live-action adaptations of anime are notoriously difficult to produce and nearly every one I have seen has been a dumpster fire of an experience.

Despite my worries, after watching Season 1 following its release on August 31, 2023, I was left shockingly pleased.

Since I was eagering anticipating more, the release date of the second season (March 10, 2026) couldn’t arrive fast enough.

After watching and having time to digest this newest season, it has completely surpassed my expectations.

Unable to do a 1-to-1 adaptation (the original “One Piece”  has over 1,000 episodes and is still going), the choices they made of what to include and what to cut kept the story flowing smoothly.

The producers managed to adapt a shocking 91 episodes into eight hour-long episodes. With this drastic difference, some changes were made to the plot, something I was initially angered by.

When I was able to put my anger aside and give it a try, the changes surprisingly added to the story and enhanced the emotions many characters experienced.

Introducing characters earlier, killing off characters who honestly had no right surviving in the anime, and adding or altering some lines all actually intensified the story.

Alongside the changes, one stand-out area of this adaptation is the cast.

I had already fallen in love with the cast following the first season, but the new additions were captivating, and those from Season 1 came back with fervor and clear enthusiasm to play their roles.

Every member of the main crew underwent special training to better represent their character. Some of these included: gaining a black-belt in taekwondo, studying map reading and cartography, sharpshooting with a slingshot, or gaining upwards of 50 pounds.

Seeing actors who want to play their roles and do everything in their power to better encapsulate them is refreshing and a joy to see.

Another area that sold this as an amazing live-action adaptation is the show’s ability to ground a series with such absurd fantasy elements in a tangible, lived-in world.

Through practical effects and CGI, countless otherworldly powers and creatures were brought to life. These were all done with superb detail and made many of the elements more heavy and visceral compared to how they come off through an animated medium.

From races like fishmen and giants to characters with powers that let them turn into elements, animals, or in Luffy’s case: rubber, every other-worldly aspect was brought to life in a way that showed clear thought and effort from a team that truly cares for the work they do.

Making a live-action feel real with all of these aspects is challenging, but they managed to pull it off. Watching feels as if you are in our world only with some additional wacky changes.

My joy for the success of this live-action can barely be put to words.

While there’s no telling how long they can go on for, I would love to see them continue for as long as possible. It could very well come to rival the anime in terms of quality.

“One Piece” Season 2 is streaming on Netflix, and the anime can be watched on multiple platforms.
