The Literature Appreciation Society is a group of people who advocate awareness of certain literary titles, and bring people together to discuss books.
Their recent read, Like Water for Chocolate, sold close to a million copies, and is originally written in Spanish.
The Literature Appreciation Society was founded approximately two years ago, due to the fact that there was not one before for quite some time.
The purpose of the club is to read and analyse selected texts on a monthly basis. Books selected either follow a theme such as love, death, life, happiness, and the other genres.
The club is led by Brittany Ciboski, a senior English major, who is the president of the club, and Vicky Villagomez, a senior Psychology major, who is vice-president.
“We’ve had anywhere from five to fifteen people, not including board members.” Said Brittany Ciboski “We’re not like a huge organization, and I think a book club is better when it is associated with other people, and when one on one conversations are something we can do.
“Last year, we chose a book, in honor of the Hispanic Heritage month, and it went really well, so we decided to do it again, and that’s why we chose “Like Water for Chocolate.
Like Water for Chocolate is a novel by a Mexican novelist Laura Esquivel. It is about a ranching family where the youngest daughter, due to tradition, was not allowed to marry the love of her life. Unable to express her emotions freely, she puts them into her cooking.
The Literary Society also hosts an event called “The Writer’s Tea”, which they host every semester. It is a gathering, or social, where students can bring in some of their writing, poetry, scripts, etc.
They can perform or read it in front others and receive some constructive criticism on how to improve their work. Members also help with the direction which one can go in. Students can also just sit back, and enjoy the works of others.
“This is to help the students to get out and get creative, encourages students to get help from the community in developing their creative pursuits, to share the love of reading, the love of literature and writing with the community.” Said Brittany Ciboski
“I think this really opens the door for some people. Personally, I do not feel comfortable sharing my writing, but when its in like a specific group of people that I got to know over time, it makes me more comfortable, and really encourages me to share what I’ve written.” Said Vicky Villagomez.
The Literary Appreciation Society is open to everybody, and everyone is welcome to attend the Writer’s Tea event. The event is located in L306 of the Warde Academic Building, and refreshments will be served.
Students are encouraged to bring their own works as well, even if they are not a part of the club.
Normal club meetings take place every other Thursday, in room L310, at 3:30 p.m.
