I’m really dreading Thanksgiving. My family does not get along and there is always a fight. I would so much rather spend time with my friends, but I know my parents will be furious with me if I don’t attend their dinner. What do I do?
Sincerely,
Hoping for a Good Holiday
Dear Hoping,
Some people just don’t like the holidays and that’s understandable. This time of year can be very difficult especially if you do not have a family that gets along well with eachother.
Unfortunately, I understand all too well what a headache it is when family doesn’t get along at holiday time. But, you know what? You just have to deal with it.
The holidays are all about being with your family and your friends. And families fight, it’s just a fact of life.
Instead of dreading the day thinking that someone is going to start up an argument, how about you be proactive in helping the day go as smoothly as possible.
If your family always fights over the same stupid things, just try to do things that would detour them from getting into it.
For example, if your aunt always picks on your uncle and it causes a tiff, then attempt to keep their attention on something else so they pay no mind to each other.
Tell your uncle all about your thrilling life at SXU and then take your aunt into the living room to bond over the football game.
Instead of complaining about your family, you should be there for them. Like I said before, the holidays are all about being together. Don’t let arguments get in the way of you making good lasting memories with your loved ones.
Also, who wants to miss out on delicious turkey and stuffing?
Happy Thanksgiving and remember to listen to Lauren!
