Linking the Old and New

A Link Between Worlds will have you guessing what is happening in Hyrule.
A Link Between Worlds will have you guessing what is happening in Hyrule.

Twenty seven years have passed since a legend was passed long ago. Besides the ever famous Mario making its debut during the 80s, the Legend of Zelda series made its premier in 1986 with the title of the same time.

But what is so important about a series that has been running this long? On Friday, November 22, another game is adding itself to a collecting of Zelda’s famous titles, including Ocarina of Time (1998), Twilight Princess (2006), and Skyward Sword (2011). It is appropriately named The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

A Link Between Worlds takes place in the land of Hyrule. However, unlike other games, it takes place in a world that has been used before. It takes the same Hyrule from A Link to the Past (1991-2). But do not worry Zelda fans, this games has an entirely new plot from its predecessor.

But wait, why how is it different from A Link to the Past? From what Nintendo has released so far, this brand new game takes place several generations after its predecessor. Furthermore more, A Link Between Worlds will not feature a key area: The Dark World. Whether the key antagonist of the series, Ganon, will show up again is yet to be discovered.

What is nice about this release is that there are absolutely no spoilers. Woah, wait, how does this happen? Shouldn’t a Japanese video game have spoilers months in advance? Well, ladies and gentlemen, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is releasing a month before its Japanese counterpart. A full month, you heard me right. The Japanese release of the game will be coming out on December 26, which is not uncommon for the series, but the amount of time passed is.

An avid Zelda gamer I may be, I do not see myself playing A Link Between Worlds when it first comes out. Because it is taking place in a world I played growing up, I feel like I might just wait a couple months until it comes out before playing it. Maybe nostalgia is creeping up on me, but I play Zelda games for the excitement of a new world of Hyrule to explore and different interpretations for a new game in the series. This one does not fulfill that joy I get from a new Zelda game’s overworld.

Just because I am waiting does not mean you should not! If you have a Nintendo 3DS or 2DS, I would pick up a copy of A Link Between Worlds this holiday season.
