Saint Xavier University clashed with Governors State University in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Matchup on Tuesday, Oct. 17 on their home pitch at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.
SXU had a magnificent performance as they won the game 6 goals to 1. With scoring 6 goals, this was their highest tally of goals of this season.
The goals were scored by Junior Midfielder Louisa Schreiber who scored two goals and now has recorded 6 goals for the Cougars this season.
Junior Forward Esmeralda Diaz has 2 assists and guides SXU with 4 assists.
Freshman Forward Alex Jonaitis had one goal in this game, which is her fifth goal of the season for SXU.
Senior Defender Aylin Gallardo scored her first goal and also had her first assist in Collegiate soccer.
Sophomore Midfielder Hope Lewis added to the game along with Freshman Forward Citlali Chavez, who also scored her first goal from a header.
Schreiber opened the scoring in just the 3rd minute of the game, which was thought to be a perfect start for them. Diaz gave the assist for Schreiber to put it in the back of the net.
SXU conceded right away in the 6th minute from a corner kick that brought the game back to square one.
Six minutes later, the Cougars retook the lead with Jonaitis finding the net from another assist by Diaz from the right-hand side.
From this point forward SXU did not look back and took control of the game.
Schreiber added her second goal of the afternoon in the 34th minute of the game.
Gallardo put one in from 45 yards out and the Cougars finished the half with a commanding 4-1 lead.
Lewis and Chavez finished the game off with the fifth and sixth goals of the game in the 58th minute and 74th minute to come away with all 3 points.
Continuing onto this past weekend’s event, the Cougars squared off against Indiana South Bend on Saturday, Oct. 21 in Lakeview, Indiana.
The story of the match was Diaz scoring her first collegiate hat trick in her career.
SXU came away with a 4-2 win on the road.
Schreiber scored the final goal for the Cougars.
With their win, Saint Xavier now qualifies for a spirit in the CCAC tournament that kickoffs on Nov. 2nd.
Saint Xavier had a season-high 26 shots in total, with 17 of them going on target. SXU could have scored more than four goals, but could not finish more chances.
Jonaitis had herself two assists with 4 shots and 3 attempts to find the back of the net.
Chavez had 5 shots with 4 of them going to the target.
Senior Goalkeeper Dayana Gonzalez had her debut vs. Governors State, marking her first start of the season, and Freshman Goalkeeper Yajaira Daza-Mendoza made her debut for SXU in the second half.
Diaz found the net to put Saint Xavier in the lead in the 14th minute with an assist by Jonaitis.
Ten minutes later in the 24th minute, Schreiber made it 2-0 to score her seventh goal of the season.
Diaz scored her second goal of the game in the 29th minute and her third just a minute later to complete her hat trick.
With SXU coming out victorious in these last two games, their overall record now stands with 7 wins, 3 draws, and 3 losses. In conference they stand with 16 points with 5 wins, 3 draws, and 1 defeat. Saint Xavier’s next encounter is against Judson University on Wednesday, Oct. 25th at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field at home.
