Saint Xavier University’s soccer team  took on Roosevelt University on Wednesday, Sept. 27 on the road at Morris Field in Arlington Heights, Ill.

The team held it out to the end and came out with a hard-earned 2-1 victory. Their overall record now moves to 4 wins 1 draw, and 3 losses

In their conference, they stand with a 2 wins, 1 draw, and 1 lost record and sit 4th in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The first half was scoreless, but SXU had some good chances. In the 10th minute of the game, Senior Neida Ocampo had a shot on goal that bounced off of the crossbar.

Junior Forward Louisa Schreiber had another opportunity to score in the 21st minute to open the scoring, but it was blocked by RU’s defense. She also had the most shots on target on the team with 3.

Despite a solid start from the beginning and coming out strong, SXU could not get the early goal to gain momentum for the rest of the game.

Roosevelt had a good start, but Saint Xavier did a good job of defending and not conceding.

The goals were scored by sophomore midfielder Hope Lewis at the 67-minute, along with freshman forward Alex Jonatis at the 61-minute. Lewis scored from 20 yards out as she scored her first goal of the season.

SXU, however, did concede in the 74-minute via a freekick, and their lead was cut to one goal to get back into the game.

Lewis recorded 2 shots, while Jonaris had one shot on target and converted her only opportunity. Jonatis netted her 3rd goal of the season and sits second on SXU’s top-scoring list.

Schreiber leads the way with the most goals at the time of writing, with 4 goals going into the back of the net.

Sophomore midfielder Veronica Davilla attempted 3 shots in her 82 minutes of play, but could not find the back of the net.

Junior defender Jacquline Gonzalez set up Jonatis, who gathered the ball and put it past the goalkeeper to break the deadlock and make it 1-0 for SXU.

In the 90 minutes of play, Saint Xavier had 11 shots with 5 of them going to the target.

SXU could have had some more goals, but they could just not get the ball in between the sticks.

With the 2 goals that were scored, this was their 12th and 13th goals of the season.

The freshman goalkeeper Natalie Dybass had 4 saves, but could not keep a clean sheet. Throughout the season she has kept 3.

In the 84th minute of play, Dybass made a key block to keep her team in the lead, and the defense did excellent in blocking a shot late in the 87th to remain in the lead.

Saint Xavier did receive one yellow card in this game, with Scrieber being booked in the 15th minute, and RU received one yellow card in the 35 minutes.

It was a tough game at the end, but SXU defended well and pulled off the win.

Their next game will take place on Saturday, Oct. 7 in Joliet, Ill., and will face off against the University of St. Francis, which is also a CCAC game.

They are aiming to be top of the table in their conference; they sit with 7 points and 3 points are key to getting first place. Saint Xavier stands 3 points away from the leader Trinity Christian who has 10 points.

This will be their ninth game of the season, and it is scheduled to kick off at 1:00 p.m., which will be another tough game to grind out a victory and get their 3rd win of the season in the conference.
