Letter Sent to Those Affected by Hacking

Letter from the university                                The Xavierite

On Wednesday, Oct. 30, Saint Xavier University (SXU) sent a Notice of Data Incident to students, staff, former employees, alumni and more.

The notice provided information about what happened, the school’s response and steps to take to help protect personal information for the future.

In July 2023, the school became aware of potential suspicious activity within their computer systems. An investigation was put in place where it was found that an unauthorized user downloaded certain files stored on SXU systems. The files were downloaded between June 29 and July 18, 2023.

The files that were downloaded included names and Social Security numbers of those in the SXU system.

Federal law enforcement was notified of the matter and SXU is currently implementing additional security measures to lower the risk of unauthorized access in the systems.

SXU is providing those affected with twelve months access to credit monitoring services through IDX as well as information on how to better protect their personal information. The service costs will be covered by the university.

The university recommended reviewing personal account statements and credit reports for any suspicious activity at this time.

Steps that can be taken to help protect personal information are enrolling in monitoring services and monitoring your own accounts.

The United States law entitles one free credit report annually from the following bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

Keith Elder, Ph.D., MPH, MPA, shared, “Saint Xavier recognizes the impact this disruption has had on those affected, and we take this matter and the security of information in our care very seriously.  We have partnered with IDX, a ZeroFox company, which has dedicated agents available to answer any questions about this incident and advise on the steps you can take to protect your personal information.”

“Further, as part of our ongoing commitment to the privacy and security of personal information in our care, we continue to review and, where necessary, enhance our existing policies and procedures relating to data protection and security.  We have also implemented additional security measures to mitigate risk associated with this incident and to help minimize the reoccurrence of a similar future incident,” Elder said.
