Saint Xavier University has  recently released Crime Reports for the 2010, 2011, and 2012 school years and it has shown a decrease in a majority of crimes occurring on and around campus.

According to Public Safety there has been a restructure of shifts in an effort to increase their visibility by adding additional people to each shift. They have also strived to keep students more aware. One of the ways they have done this is by speaking with incoming students at FOCUS about how to stay safe on campus.

When asked how students can try to keep themselves as safe as possible John Touhy, Public Safety’s Director and Chief of Police, responded by saying, “Students need be aware of where they are at and their surroundings.” To be as vigilant as possible students should avoid wearing headphones or being so engaged in their cell phones that they disregard what is occurring around them.

However, both Touhy and Erin Laske, the Director of Emergency Management, agreed that the Group Theory is a student’s best chance for not becoming a victim of crime. By traveling in groups students are less likely to be approached by individuals looking to victimize students.

For students who want to keep themselves updated on Saint Xavier’s safety initiatives and its crime reports they can begin by going to the Public Safety website, http://www.sxu.edu/student-life/publicsafety/contact.asp.

Students can also go online to their SXU Portal where under services one of the tabs is Public Safety. Through the portal students can find emergency guides, shuttle request forms, safety bulletins, and contact information for Public Safety.

Laske stated, “We want to encourage students to talk about a situation or person who makes them feel uncomfortable because Public Safety is genuinely here to help and to do that we need to know what’s going on.” If a student ever feels uncomfortable contacing Public Safety directly they can talk with an advisor, counselor, etc. on campus. All departments have procedures to contact Public Safety concerning specific incidents.

If students want to report an incident they can call Public Safety at:
