Lady Cougars Go Undefeated Over The Weekend

This past weekend was a pretty busy one for the Saint Xavier women’s basketball team. The Lady Cougars were on the road back-to-back days for two conference games.

On Friday, the Cougars survived a thriller down in South Bend. The No. 20 ranked Cougars took on the Indiana University-South Bend Titans in a CCAC matchup.

The Cougars trailed by five points at halftime and eight points entering the final period. It wasn’t until the final period where the Cougars rallied from behind to outscore the Titans 28-17 in the fourth quarter behind clutch play from senior guard Sidney Lovitsch.

Lovitsch scored eight of her 22 points in the fourth and  finished the game with six rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Senior forward Claire Austin had an impressive game as well with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Senior guard Maia Fawcett added 11 points and five rebounds.

The Titans scored on a layup with 12 seconds remaining off of a turnover by the Cougars to take the lead 76-75. Lovitsch came down and was fouled on a layup attempt with 4 seconds left in the game. She converted on both free throws to give the Cougars a 77-76 lead.

Following a timeout, the Titans turned the ball over and senior guard Alyssa Streeter sealed the deal with two free throws with 2 seconds remaining. The Cougars beat the Titans with a final score of 79-76.

Saturday’s game was  less stressful. The Cougars handled the Judson Eagles rather easily behind an extremely balanced scoring attack. The Cougars saw five players in double figures with senior center McKenna Zobel leading the way with 14 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks. The Cougars also saw 13 points each from Maia Fawcett, Claire Austin (13 rebounds), and Sidney Lovitsch (five assists). Senior guard Bri Flayter added 11 points and seven rebounds.

This Thursday, the Lady Cougars will take the Saint Ambrose Fighting Bees out of Iowa in a battle for first place in the conference. The Fighting Bees currently sit at 15-1 in the conference, while the Cougars hold a 14-1 record in the CCAC.

The winner of this game will most likely lock up the first seed for the conference tournament coming up in the next couple of weeks. Thursday’s game should be exhilarating, so make sure to pack the house at 5 pm in the Shannon Center.
