Kim, There Are People That Are Dying

It is no surprise that 2020 has been one of the craziest years yet. One of the biggest reasons for this craziness is the COVID-19 pandemic. During this pandemic, many events have had to be cancelled. I actually turned 21 this year and I was not able to celebrate or go out. Although I would’ve loved to celebrate my birthday, I knew this wasn’t the best thing to do. I followed CDC guidelines and chose not to celebrate, but there are many people who are still acting as if the virus is gone and are resuming normal activities.

One person who is currently under heat is Kim Kardashian. Kim Kardashian Recently  celebrated her 40th birthday on a private island in French Polynesia. Kim Kardashian took to Twitter and said “After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time.”

After people saw Kim’s tweets and pictures from her birthday celebration, she received a lot of backlash and criticism. Many are criticizing Kim for acting as if everything is back to normal. I must say that I agree with a lot of the criticism Kim received. Now is not the time to be having lavish parties and acting like the virus is gone. People are literally dying and many have lost their jobs and are struggling to pay their bills. Kim’s celebration was estimated to cost around $1 million. This is an insane amount of money for the everyday person, and Kim just spent it like it was nothing. There are people that have been struggling to pay their bills since the start of the pandemic and Kim has been very insensitive to others.

One tweet that made me particularly upset is when Kim tweeted “…I realize that for most people, this is something that is so far out of reach right now, so in moments like these, I am humbly reminded of how privileged my life is. #thisis40”

Now to me, this tweet translates to “Thank you all for being in such a state of need during the pandemic, you all remind me of how rich I am.” This tweet is so incredibly inconsiderate of Kim. I would hope that Kim is always appreciative of the privilege she has, but apparently she only recognizes her privilege at times when others are struggling. Kim should have expected all the backlash she received. It was not an appropriate time for her to be showing off her lavish lifestyle, even during a pandemic.

I hope Kim and other celebrities take note after this incident and ensure it doesn’t happen again. Now is not the time to be having big parties and showing it off on social media. The virus is not gone and people are still struggling during this difficult time. I hope that what happened to Kim serves as a reminder for others to be a little more aware of the reality many people are facing.
