Volleyball
It’d end up being a long week for the Women’s volleyball team as not only did they have a tune up match at the beginning of the week, but they also had a two-day tournament to look forward to at the end of the week.
Tue, October 11th
Starting it off for the women, they had what can be seen as a tune up for the upcoming tournament against their conference rival St. Ambrose University. The Cougars would have the advantage however as they had the luxury of playing amongst the greatest set of fans any school could ask for (us of course). Now that the scene is set, let’s get ready to rumble!
The Cougars were able to win this matchup 3 sets to St Ambrose’s 0. While all the sets were closely contested, St. Ambrose couldn’t keep up with SXU’s athletes. I mean somebody call the cops, because SXU was simply killing it out there. They totaled 40 total kills in the game.
Overall, this was a must win, and a huge momentum boost for the Cougars heading into their upcoming tournament.
Fri-Sat, October 14-15
The Aquinas Cornerstone Classic, a tournament hosting some of the toughest teams in the division. How would SXU fare? Would their past win on Tuesday boost them major wins, or will they crack under the spotlight that is now shining on them?
Day 1
In their first matchup of the day, SXU went up against Siena Heights University in what can best be described as a matchup that SXU would like to forget. SXU dropped all three sets, and 2 of which was by an eight-point margin. Despite the loss, SXU would not be deterred as they wanted to end the Friday with a win to ensure some sweet dreams. Win they did as they beat Aquinas College, 3 sets to 1. Sophomore Courtney Joyce was the MVP of the day as she totaled 54 assists, 12 kills, and 22 digs in the two games. A phenomenal day for her and the team as a whole as they finished off the day with a win giving them the energy to come back even stronger on Saturday.
Day 2
It’s the second day and SXU looks to start off with a win against their matchup of University of Northwestern Ohio. The two teams traded sets like I used to trade Pokémon cards going back in forth until one team stood tall, and unfortunately that team wasn’t SXU but instead it was Northwestern Ohio. Loss aside, SXU still had one more matchup to lookup to which meant a chance to at least finish 2-2 at the tournament. Their opponents, Cornerstone university had other plans though as they completely dismantled SXU taking all three sets with two of those being won by margins of ten or more.
So SXU finished the tournament with one win and three losses. This is still a pretty solid number as all of those teams were tough, so to take home one win must’ve been pretty big for the team.
Roosevelt University is the opponent for the Cougars as they look to take them down on their court floor this Tuesday October 18th.
For a recap of that game and many others keep it locked here at the Xavierite.
