Over the weekend, the Women’s volleyball team competed in the Davenport University Panther Invitational in Grand Rapids Michigan. The 2-day tournament saw SXU compete against some pretty tough competition. Would they keep up, or would they find themselves getting left in the dust?
V.S. Indiana Institute of Technology
In their first matchup of the tournament, the Cougars dropped the game to Indiana, failing to win any of the 3 sets. What made the defeat even worse for SXU, was the fact that they lost the first 2 sets by a Margin of 10 or more. The last set (Set 3) saw them keep up with Indiana’s pace, going on a 4-0 run to bring it in close, but this proved to be inefficient as Indiana was still able to walk out with the win. Freshman Rory Manion totaled 8 kills in this matchup, leading SXU.
V.S. Aquinas University
This was SXU’s final matchup on day 1 and sadly it would end in a loss. Aquinas really dominated the first set, winning it 25-16. The 2nd set saw SXU come alive as they grinded out a tough win. Both teams were tied up at 25 apiece, but it was SXU who showed they wanted it more by getting the 27-25 set 2 victory. Set 3 saw Aquinas reassert themselves as the dominant team as they went on multiple runs that ended with them getting a 25-15 victory. The 4th, and what would be the final set saw Aquinas go up 9-1 early, making it quite clear they weren’t in the business of choking. SXU did go on a 5-0 run to bring the game to 21-15, but Aquinas would not be stopped as they went on to win the set 25-17, and the game up 3 sets to SXU’s 1.
V.S. Davenport University
Day 2 of the tournament, and SXU’s final matchup of the tournament saw them taking on the hosting team of Davenport. With 2 straight losses already lingering over their heads, one would think SXU would be hungry for a victory to close this tournament out right? Wrong. SXU fell to Davenport 3 sets to 0. SXU came out and played inspired Volleyball as they only lost in set 1 by 2 points. The next 2 sets weren’t as pretty. In set 2, SXU lost 25-14, their largest margin of defeat this season. Set 3 saw them losing 25-18. Overall, this was a disappointing tournament for SXU. They played some tough teams, but that’s no excuse for losing a set by 11 points. Hopefully, SXU can come out on Tuesday and regain some of their mojo against Robert Morris University.
