Ken’s Corner Sports Recap 1/23

Men’s Volleyball

Starting out the season 1-1. The Cougars looked to go above .500 as they face up against the 0-1 Dominican University. Playing on their home court, SXU seemed to have the clear advantage in this game, will they use it to their advantage?

Tuesday, January 24

Despite playing on their home court, SXU was unable to obtain the win losing 3 sets to 0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-17 respectively). They kept it close in the first set, but Dominican squashed them in the next two sets by a surplus of 8 or more.  Although they took a tough loss, senior outside hitters Sean Barry and Dan O’Keefe combined for an impressive 17 kills.

Despite the L, SXU can always bounce back in their next game against Robert Morris University coming up on Tuesday which is sure to be a CCAC road game thriller!

Women’s Track

The Women’s track team competed this weekend in the Grand Valley State University Mike Lints Alumni Open. This was a 25-team tournament that unfortunately saw SXU not place at all. Despite the unfortunate team result, two individuals had an exceptional outing at this outing. Senior Nicole Watkins not only became SXU’s first national qualifier for the NAIA Women’s Indoor Track and Field National Championships, but broke a school record (set by herself) finishing the 800 meter with a time of 2:19.78. Junior Rachel Brookes also had a great outing. She ran the 400 meter with a time of 1:01.26, breaking a record she had set back in 2015.

Although they didn’t perform the way they wanted to, the team must be proud of the individuals who had record breaking outings.

Men’s Track

The Men’s track team competed at the same event and unfortunately was met with the same fate. The team didn’t score but like the women, there was a diamond in the rough with junior Abel Hernandez. Hernandez competed in the 5000-meter finishing 11th out of 51 other runners. Hernandez finished with a time of 15:35.77.

The team competes this weekend in the Olivet Nazarene University Invite.

For a recap of that event and many others keep it locked here at the Xavierite.
