Recently, President Trump had threatened to close off areas of the U.S-Mexico border, and has cut off foreign aid to Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
In a tweet posted on April 6, 2019, Trump said that Democrats should join Republicans in ending, “the horrible, costly and foolish loopholes in [U.S] Immigration Laws.”
“Once that happens, all will be smooth,” the President stated. “We can NEVER allow Open Borders!”
What President Trump fails to acknowledge, is how damaging this is to asylum seekers and the infrastructure of our own country. Many migrate to other countries to escape violence and oppression in their own country. Despite this alarming issue, Trump refuses to help those seeking sanctuary.
On April 6, 2019, Trump recently called the asylum program “a scam” and belittled asylum seekers. A border shutdown would also affect millions of Americans. In a recent AP News article, it was indicated that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce stated that, “The U.S. and Mexico trade about $1.7 billion in goods daily… closing the border would be an unmitigated economic debacle that would threaten 5 million American jobs.”
It’s frustrating to see the president refuse to accept the fact that immigration is very beneficial to our country. It’s even more frustrating to see so many Americans believe Trump and his lies. If Trump really wanted to help our country, he would move on from this issue and focus on the more damaging ones.
Keep our borders open.
