Keep The Government Open For The People

Federal Workers Protest the Government Shutdown Tim Tai/Philadelphia Enquirer

On January 25th, Donald Trump walked into the Rose Garden of the White House and delivered a speech that announced that he would be signing a three week budget to end the government shutdown.

The shutdown, which had lasted 35 days at that point, had effected 800,000 government employees and was beginning to affect airports nationwide.

However, during the speech, Trump said that he would veto another budget that doesn’t contain funding for a wall in three weeks.

Neither the Democrats or the Republicans look willing to compromise on wall funding and it seems that we will be right back to square one in three weeks. In the meantime, both Congress and the President seem to be going on with business as usual.

If the government shuts down again in three weeks, the 800,000 federal workers who are just recovering from the first shutdown would be thrown right back into chaos. These workers were at the point of using food banks to get food because they never received their paychecks.

Now if Trump doesn’t get money for his wall, those workers would be right back to square one. While negotiations about the budget continue to take place, it is important that to pass a bill giving the missed paychecks back the workers.

Whether or not you believe a wall will seriously deter crime at the border, it is important to keep the government open. Not just for the sake of Americans who elected their representatives to do work, but also for the government workers who would be out of a job if the government is shut down.
