Monday, September 26, in the Warde Academic Center Student Lounge, Julie Veloz held a workshop for the students of Saint Xavier. This event took place because this month is Hispanic Heritage Month. Veloz spoke about her background and the struggles that she faced growing up as a Latina woman. She spread her message to both students and staff members through a PowerPoint presentation, a series of videos, and many powerful statements and words of encouragement. The turnout was amazing. Each and every student was engaged, willing to listen to her story and ask questions.

One powerful observation that was gathered during this event was the diversity of students in the room. There were many students of all ethnicities that came to be apart of her workshop. This shows that, no matter the ethnicity, you can learn from each other to better yourself in the present and future.

As stated earlier in her presentation Veloz said a lot of powerful statements.

“It’s your choice if you want to live the life that society gives you, or you can shine like a diamond,”she stated.

Oftentimes, people are viewed negatively because of their background and the way that they grew up. Veloz made it clear to her audience that if you want something, go out to get it and don’t let anything stop you on that journey. In the end, she received a huge round of applause and the students and staff members were mesmerized by her powerful message. Veloz did a fantastic job with encouraging the students by helping them understand that there can be light at the end of a dark tunnel, if you use your resources and work hard. Thank you, Julie Veloz for taking the time out to encourage Saint Xavier’s student body. Also extending a thank you to Dr. Campbell (Vice President of Student Affairs) and Alexa Zaharris (Assistant Director of Class Programs) for organizing this event. We are looking forward to what is next in store for the students for Hispanic Heritage Month.
