With the recent release of hit album “Nectar,” Joji has been taking the world by storm. Fans are starting to understand this new persona outside of “Filthy Frank” and “Pink Guy.” Joji provided fans with an exclusive one night only live performance titled as “The Extravaganza.” The Extravaganza allowed fans to receive an intimate experience with Joji, with a subtle carnival theme attached to it.
Joji included humorous aspects within. Such as, showing off his talent for juggling, and hiring a Justin Timberlake look alike that made several appearances throughout the concert. Joji would tell him “we can’t afford you,” as a way to kick him out of the concert due to “budget” concerns. A scarecrow “playing” the piano, a magician, an opera singer, and random aliens making several appearances. These little aspects expressed Joji’s graceless humor and gave viewers an inside scoop on what he is all about.
The Extravaganza started out with the performance of “Sanctuary.” He performed most of the song anxiously wondering when he would be shot down into a pit of water, he was sitting on a dunk tank the entire time. This kept the performance alive and incredibly interesting, it had fans on the edge of their seats. Several people took a shot at Joji, until a professional baseball player cut the performance short with a great shot- resulting in Joji being soaked in water. Followed by the performance of “Attention” Joji dressed up in a horse costume. This balanced out the somber lyrics with a creative performance. It was all extremely engaging and very interesting.
Joji would multitask throughout the performances of several songs. This definitely captured the attention of viewers, due to the authenticity and creativity of the construction of these performances. Such as, being a referee in a wrestling match during the performance of “Pretty Boy” and cooking an entire meal during “Your Man” while wearing pajamas. Joji depicted the epitome of the perfect boyfriend during the performance of “Your Man.” He maintained a chilled out and laid back vibe attached to him throughout the performance despite the fact that he prepared some eggs and burned himself several times, which ultimately emphasized the authentic vibe Joji expresses. At the end of the song, he captivated viewers by pointing at the camera by saying “I’ll be your man.”
“I guess we’re all just a couple of bent spoons.” Was what Joji stated after witnessing the magician bend a spoon. This proved to the audience that Joji relates to everyone and has the ability to express a serious issue with humor. People have endured serious hardships for the past couple of months, and Joji understands that. That quote was a nice connection to our current reality.
Joji had a metaphorical performance of “Run.” This song depicts the hardships of the fateful ending of a relationship. He slowly makes his way to his final destination which is a treadmill in which he will “run” on. He starts off by walking on tires, hangs off monkey bars, and finally reaches the dreadful treadmill. He physically struggled doing all of this while singing the song. This performance expressed how draining and exhausting relationships can turn out to be. By slowly making his way to the treadmill, he is depicting the obstacles one may face in relationships. This was a creative and heartfelt twist to the overall vibe of the song.
Joji concluded The Extravaganza with the hit song “Slow Dancing in the Dark.” He performed an acoustic version of it to tie everything together. There was yet another surprise in store for the audience. Joji gave his farewells to fans, “well I guess that’s the end of the show.” Joji then does something incredibly unexpected, he “stabbed” a production crew member in the neck and ran off. Which was totally unexpected, this then brought back the graceless humor Joji expresses in his life and career.
