Hollywood has given us films and shows that hold special places in our hearts. We grew up with them, and they taught us things about life and ourselves. That spark and those moments of magic were amazing and will forever be cherished, but Hollywood nowadays wants to recreate that nostalgia with reboots.
When this idea of reboots first came about, I am not going to lie, I was not mad at the idea. I really appreciated the nostalgia of it all, and that even after all these years later, the same characters I loved to watch had a story to continue.
Although I felt that way in the beginning, now, I am extremely sick of reboots.
There have been reboots of shows like Full House, Boy Meets World, Party of Five, Will & Grace, and, in recent news, Fresh Prince of Bel Air. All of these shows are classics and really shaped television to what it is today, but the reboots were unnecessary in my opinion.
These shows are all mostly from the 80s or 90s and worked really well during that time period and resonated with fans, but bringing these back now just does not hold the same spark or magic as it did when it first premiered. There are storylines in each show that only make sense for the time period they were popular in and forcing that same cheesy comedy does not work in today’s climate.
Storylines that were seen as taboo or radical back then have become the norm now. I think that forcing these shows to fit in this time era is tacky and lacks creativity. Also, there have been many reboots that follow the same storyline as the original show, but now have a cast that is filled with people of color.
Although I appreciate that Hollywood is creating diverse shows, I do not understand why it has to be the same plot as a show from a long time ago. Shouldn’t there just be a new story overall?
All of these reboots are causing a lack of originality and are not making room for new stories to be heard. This also relates with how Disney wants to make every animated movie a live action film and the only thing that is drawing audiences’ attention and a great yearn to see the film is the cast.
Instead of creating live action films of the same story we have heard before, Disney can use that time and money to create an original film that promotes diversity and inclusion of new stories that have not been and need to be told. There are still so many stories to be told and groups of people that still need representation.
In an age where we can celebrate diversity in Hollywood, I do not understand why creators are not taking advantage of their resources to really give audiences what they want. It is time for Hollywood to stop creating senseless reboots that are not resonating with audiences and make new stories that create magic on screen.
