Social Media Influencers Negatively Impact Society

In today’s society, social media has become a big part of our lives and with it social influencers came to rise.

Social influencers have impacted our lives in negative ways and we do not even realize it.

These celebrities or social influencers are admired by so many and set all the trends of society whether they are negative or positive.

Since they have such a huge fan base, companies will usually ask for the cooperation of a social influencer in order to advertise their products.

We see hundreds to thousands of ads everyday and a lot of them are from celebrities that we follow on social media. This impacts us because ads actually affect how we feel and how we want to be seen by others.

We are constantly on our phones and on the internet, because of this we are exposed to the trends and standards that these social influencers set for us.

These celebrities advertise clothing, makeup, shoes, health products, and all types of things that would “benefit” us and make us look better.

These ads set the standards for what beauty is in our society, which is one of the biggest reasons that I think social media influencers damage us more than anything.

We look at the people we see on social media and if we are not like them, then we want to try and become like them. This affects us negatively because we are trying to change ourselves to live up to the beauty standards of society.

When we look at ourselves in the mirror, we see all the “bad” qualities that we have and want to change instead of seeing all the good qualities.

An example of this would be Victoria’s Secret. They are one of the many brands that set the standard of what “beauty” should be considered. If you look at all the models that they hire, most of them have the same body figure and the clothing and lingerie sizes are also limited.

Other examples would be Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian. The two sisters have their own line of makeup and advertise it constantly on their social media accounts. They are both celebrities and have many fans who adore them. In order to advertise their makeup line, they post pictures of them using it and wearing it on their social media accounts. Since they have fans who admire them and look up to them, the fans are baited into buying the makeup products so that they can come closer to resembling their celebrity icon. They set this standard that in order to become beautiful like them, buying their makeup products would help.

I feel that there should not be any beauty standards for society in general. In an indirect way, a lot of celebrities and companies are saying that we are not good enough and that we should buy their products in order to become “beautiful.” Everyone is different, unique, and beautiful in their own way. People should not base beauty off what celebrities and companies portray as beautiful.
