In Memorium of Mason Santiago

Mason Santiago, a student athlete at Saint Xavier passed away on Monday Sept. 16, 2024. 

Santiago was #36 of SXU’s football team and played as a linebacker, previously playing at his high school, Providence Catholic, in New Lenox, IL. 

It was reported that Santiago and his childhood friend, Tyler Koscinski, 20, passed away due to a fatal car crash on “I-80 westbound between La Grange Road on Interstate 80 in the south suburbs early Sunday morning,” according to ABC 7 Chicago

Santiago and Koscinski were driving westbound in an SUV when they collided with a semi-truck. They were said to be on the way home from SXU’s campus, and both were pronounced dead at the scene. 

The semi-truck driver was unharmed.

According to Fox 32 Chicago, “The crash happened between an SUV and a semi truck around 4:22 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-80 between La Grange Road and Harlem Avenue, according to Illinois State Police.” 

Autopsies of both Santiago and Koscinski were performed to determine the final cause and manner of death. Illinois State Police (ISP) are currently investigating the accident.
