It’s that time of year again! Saint Xavier’s Homecoming Week is this week, and there is a week full of activities planned for students to attend.

To attend these events, students simply need to reserve their spot for the event on TheDen and then show their Event Pass (a QR code found on TheDen) to gain entry at the time of said event.

Saint Xavier’s Homecoming Traditions, alongside many other treasured traditions throughout the school year, have  unfortunately lost traction since the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, some students are even  unaware of what some of these  traditions are.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, overall student engagement on campus has taken a hit.

We, at the Xavierite, have noticed this decline in engagement.

While many places are finding it difficult to return to a “sense of normalcy” after the pandemic, the university’s student engagement levels are not rising a considerable amount.

On campus, many students are not aware of what events are even available to them.

A member of the Xavierite Editorial board stated, “I’m not too aware of the Homecoming events. I think the school could do a better job of promoting them so the students, especially commuters, are more aware.”

All events being held during the year, especially larger events such as those during Homecoming Week, have been posted on TheDen and in “Posting Zones” around campus. Registered Student Organizations(RSOs) and the Student Activities Board(SAB) have their upcoming events posted in these spaces, which are accessible to all students, for a considerable amount of time before these events take place.

As noted in last week’s editorial, “It doesn’t take talking to many individuals around campus to realize there is a student involvement issue.”

“When asking students questions about events on campus they’d like to see added or improved, the overwhelming consensus was that they weren’t involved enough on campus to comment on anything.” the article continued.

Currently, the Homecoming Week activities are posted on TheDen under the Student Activities Board(SAB) page, the “Posting Zones” around campus, and members of the Student Activities Board(SAB) have been tabling in the diner to discuss the upcoming events.

Another member of the Xavierite Editorial board stated, “I’m looking forward to the Homecoming Dance, and I think it’ll be a great experience for freshmen.”

It is extremely important to make the most of the time spent at Saint Xavier, whether that be through attending football games or a karaoke night. These events are available to all students, but the decreased engagement is hurting the family-like-feeling that Saint Xavier is so well known for.
