The college experience can be divided into two categories: what you do in your actual classes, and what you do outside of them. Saint Xavier University offers a wide variety of ways that students can remain engaged outside of the classroom, especially pertaining to commuter students- who make up the majority of the student population.
For commuter students, it can be very tempting and easy to pack all your classes into the morning, get them done, and simply go back home. But is that really getting the most out of the incredibly expensive tuition we are paying? SXU offers many events on a regular basis varying between different interests.
There are events for artists, athletes, writers, performers, scientists… the list goes on. There is almost always something going on for any particular interest, and if there isn’t, anyone can start an RSO, and host the type of events they love.
Personally, the best parts of my SXU experience have come from the things I’m involved in, and not my classes. Being President of Drama Club has allowed me to do what I’m passionate about, and being a part of the Student Government Association has allowed me to learn about what it means to be a leader.
Being in The Xavierite has taught me the importance of making my voice heard. These are not things I could have learned from just sitting in a classroom.
It can be very easy to pack up your things and go home after a long day of classes, but it’s important to give yourself the chance to unwind by going to an RSO meeting, an open forum, or attending a sporting event. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to make new friends with the same interests as you.
When students have to pay such a ridiculously high price for tuition, it’s important to take advantage of every single opportunity the school offers, especially when these events offer freebies such as food or goodie bags.
The best way for SXU students to get involved on campus is by checking The Den, or looking at what’s on the posting zones throughout Warde Academic Center. Events can fill up quickly sometimes, so make sure to RSVP, and bring a friend! The best way to keep SXU alive is through student participation, so go out and make your college experience what you want it to be.
