After Gabby Petito was reported missing, people across the world continue to watch her case unfold. Yet here in Chicago, countless children go missing or have become a victim to gun violence.
Over the Labor day weekend, eight children were shot in Chicago. One was a four year old boy who was struck in the head with two bullets while sitting inside his home, receiving a haircut. Two children who were volunteering at a community back-to-school event were shot after two suspects opened fire while driving by.
Why are these children’s cases not receiving the same attention that they deserve as well?
Here at home, at least eight people were killed and another fifty nine were injured because of gun violence last weekend in Chicago. We see their names in the news for only a split moment, and then they are forgotten about by the public.
A Chicago police officer was shot while helping a teen who was lying in the street, hit by a bullet. She’s the 12th CPD officer to be shot this year. Why did her story receive so little attention in the media?
At Stroger Hospital, a CFD paramedic was shot while tending to a patient in the emergency room. CPD reports that the suspect fired shots at the hospital from his green Buick and then sped off.
Why did the story of a CFD paramedic who was shot while helping a patient receive little attention?
After Ella French was shot and killed in the line of duty, her story did not receive all the attention that she deserved. It was only in Chicago that she received the media attention that she deserved after making the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
When Jelani Day, a graduate student at Illinois State University was missing, his case was only mentioned in local news. Unfortunately, he was found a few days ago in the Illinois river in LaSalle county. His case did not receive the same attention that he deserved as well.
The loss of Gabby Petito was a tragedy; we lost a young woman who was loved by so many and had her life taken away too soon. The pain her family is suffering after burying her must be unbearable. Petitio should be still with us, safe, and with her family.
All families whose loved ones are victims of violence should receive the same attention that Gabby Petito’s case received. Her name deserved to be across headlines nationwide. Other cases should receive the attention they deserve as well.
