It’s clear Fox news is a right-wing conservative network with a republican agenda. There is no denying that. This is fine because everyone has different political views, and everyone should be able to choose what they watch.
However, when listening to some of Fox News’s usual banter, I can’t help but think that some of it is not releventnews.
For example, lately the coverage after the midterm elections has been subpar with bashing of the democratic majority for the house.
One story really stuck out to me. On an episode of Fox and Friends in September of 2018, the reporters bashed the U.S. Representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for wearing a $3500 outfit during a photoshoot when she claims to be a democratic socialist.
One reporter in this September episode stated, “I don’t care if you wear a thirty-five-hundred-dollar outfit, that’s totally fine. But then don’t go out and campaign against rich people when they spend their money on what they choose to do.”
This is known as the “strawman fallacy.” The strawman fallacy is when someone misrepresents an argument to make their side seem better. Fox news claimed she was campaigning against rich people yet wearing an expensive outfit to make their claim seem better.
It appears that fox news is grasping at straws to find out new ways to make democrats look bad.
Instead, why doesn’t fox news focus on issues they find the democrats are wrong about? Why don’t they focus on how some democrats claim to want to protect the environment, but still take money from anti-environmentally friendly lobbyists? Or what if they researched (using actual data) how anti-gun laws could impact the country? I do not understand why Fox News needs to go after petty topics when they could be reporting on actual nationwide events. The same could be said about about MSNBC; that they are a very left-winged news network that specializes in creating a liberal agenda.
My point is: perhaps we as a nation are so divided politically because news networks cover stories that make the other side look terrible.
Opinions are glorious and offer tons of variety. And that is simply amazing. But we must not let subpar stories count as actual news. We should choose who to listen to, and who to believe. We must have compassion and understanding for the people who don’t agree with us.
Overall, it would be amazing if we worked together and not against each other.
