The wait is almost over. We are now just a few days away from the World Wrestling Entertainment’s (WWE) annual ‘WrestleMania’ event, which makes it the perfect time to look at some of the matches we have in store at ‘The Grandest Stage of Them All.’
The fortieth edition of ‘WrestleMania’ will take place at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA. The event will be spread out into two nights on April 6 and 7, allowing WWE to fill the event with double the mayhem.
We will be taking a look at four of the biggest matches to look out for at this year’s event:
Seth Rollins © vs. Drew McIntyre – World Heavyweight Championship Match [Night 2]
Though Seth Rollins has been caught up in the ‘Bloodline’ vs. Cody Rhodes storyline leading into ‘Mania’, he also has a championship match of his own. He will defend his World Heavyweight Championship title against the winner of the ‘Elimination Chamber match’ Drew McIntyre.
After being robbed of having fans in attendance for his past ‘Mania’ wins due to the COVID-19 pandemic, McIntyre is hellbent on finally winning a championship in front of a packed stadium.
This motivation has made the ‘Scottish Psychopath’ more dangerous than ever; therefore it’ll be interesting to see if he can capitalize on Rollins’ distractions to leave with the title. Though with CM Punk on commentary, we can also expect him to play a role in the result of the match.
Gunther © vs Sami Zayn – Intercontinental Championship Match [Night TBD]
Throughout his historic 600+ day reign as Intercontinental Champion, Gunther has dominated the ranks of the WWE by defeating talent including Sheamus, McIntyre, Chad Gable, and Sami Zayn.
However, as fans know, the “Underdog from the Underground’ Zayn is not easy to keep down. By winning a six-man ‘gauntlet match’ on the March 11 episode of ‘RAW’, Zayn earned the right to challenge for Gunther’s championship title.
With the coaching of Gunther’s bitter rival Gable, Zayn looks to dethrone the ‘Ring General’ once and for all at ‘WrestleMania.’
We can look forward to finding out if the underdog Zayn can pull off the biggest upset of the year in defeating the champion, or if Gunther’s reign of terror will continue. No matter what the result is, I believe this will be the match that steals the show.
The Rock & Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes & Seth Rollins – [Night 1]
Trust has been a big topic when it comes to the storyline between The Rock and Roman Reigns vs Rhodes and Rollins. Rhodes has tried to make Reigns question whether his cousin is capable of being trusted, as Rock has subliminally hinted at planning to take him down.
However, Reigns has played mind games of his own on Rhodes, reminding him of Rollins’ history of betrayal.
As most fans might remember, Rollins and Reigns, alongside the former Dean Ambrose, were a part of a group known as ‘The S.H.I.E.L.D.’ The group ran roughshod all over the WWE for almost two years. This ended in June of 2014, when Rollins betrayed his teammates by attacking them with a steel chair and aligning himself with Triple H’s ‘The Authority.’
Since then, Rollins gained a reputation for being unreliable as a teammate. Despite the growth we’ve seen from Rollins as a character and Reigns’ corruption in the past few years, there is still concern over the possibility of Rollins falling into old habits.
This creates animosity among both teams heading into their tag team match on Night 1 of this year’s WrestleMania.
The stakes are high, as if Rhodes and Rollins win, the main event on Night 2 will be safe from any interference by ‘The Bloodline.’ However, if Rock and Reigns win, the match will be under their rules, opening the door for all sorts of unfair tactics to ensure Reigns retains his championship title.
Roman Reigns © vs Cody Rhodes – Undisputed WWE Universal Championship Match [Night 2]
Depending on the outcome of Night 1, the landscape of this rematch between Rhodes and Reigns may be drastically different.
We have already covered the endless saga between Rhodes and ‘The Bloodline’ for the past year. After being robbed of the victory by Reigns’s cousins in last year’s main event, Rhodes now looks to get his revenge and ‘finish his story’ once and for all.
The biggest questions surrounding this match are whether Rhodes will finally have a fair shot at winning the WWE Championship title in honor of his late-father Dusty Rhodes? Or will he have to enlist the help of Jey Uso, Rollins, or a legend such as John Cena or possibly even ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin to even the odds against ‘The Bloodline’?
We will find out on April 6 and 7 when ‘WrestleMania’ airs on Peacock.
