Last Tuesday, Hershey unveiled new carrot cake flavored Kisses for the upcoming Easter season. These bite-sized treats have been flying off of the shelves and have received mixed reviews. To see if they live up to the hype, I decided to give them a try. Read my review below and we will also take a look at some other questionable flavored candies.
When I first heard about the carrot cake flavored Kisses, I was kind of hesitant about them. I love carrot cake to begin with but it seems when candies or other treats try to duplicate a popular flavor, it never has a good outcome.
I decided to put this fear aside a give this new flavor a try. The carrot cake Kisses are only available at Walmart stores so if you are looking anywhere else, you are not going to find them. The packaging of the product I guess you can say is “cute” with three large images of the candy with a Spring-like background displayed on the bag. The price of the bag of candy is $3 and, in my opinion, a little overpriced with how small the bag is.
Now comes the moment of truth, time to try them out. As soon as you open the bag, you are immediately hit in the face with smell of cream cheese. While this is a key component to carrot cake itself, it was a little overpowering. The candy is nicely wrapped like Kisses usually are and the wrapping is orange with some lines on it, while the writing of the flavor on the little white paper strip was green, obviously to resemble a carrot.
Once the candy is unwrapped, your eyes are drawn to the pretty pastel-colored orange candy. Now it was time to eat it. Immediately, you taste the cream cheese and then not long after you get a taste of the spices that carrot cake contains. This reminded me of when Violet from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was eating the gum and as time went on, the flavor evolved.
That is how eating this candy was, you have to wait a little bit to catch all of the flavors that make up a carrot cake. In some ways, it did taste like your typical carrot cake but I think the cream cheese overpowered the candy which made it unappealing to me.
The “sweet treat” left an unpleasant aftertaste so I would recommend having some water or whatever around to get rid of the taste. Overall, the Kisses were a disappointment and it turns out that I was right, you cannot give a normally satisfying treat an unusual flavor. I would pass up this seasonable offering unless you really love cream cheese.
Now on to some other questionable candy flavors. Would you try any of these bold flavors? Pumpkin Spice Latte M&M’s – Trying to rebound after the 2014 flop of their pumpkin spice M&M’s, Mars decided to give pumpkin spice another shot but this time, adding latte to the mix. The limited edition treat certainly redeemed itself and became a popular Fall favorite.
The delectable candy contains the flavors of ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and no signs of allspice or cloves. Even though this seasonable treat may sound a little out there, it is worth a try when Fall rolls around again.
Strawberried Peanut Butter M&M’s – Yes you read that right, strawberried peanut butter M&M’s. Probably one of the oddest flavors to ever exist, this special edition treat is supposed to resemble that of a PB&J sandwich. The candy has a strawberry flavored coating and then the peanut butter in the middle.
According to numerous reviews, this M&M flavor was mediocre and the peanut butter overpowered the strawberry flavor. They must not have been that good since they are no longer made.
Green Tea Kit Kat – Just when you thought candy flavors could not get any crazier, they do. Only in Japan can you get green tea flavored Kit Kat’s. Kit Kat’s are actually a popular treat in Japan and this flavor is a best-seller.
It may seem unusual to us over here in America, but the green pastel-colored treat has a sweet maccha and white chocolate flavoring that many love. Guess you will just have to take a trip to Japan to see if they are any good.
