Five Films to Watch For Women’s History Month

Women have made significant inroads in the film industry over the course of many centuries. Many films tell powerful stories about women and their journey to empowerment, from winning Academy Awards for best director, to dominating the box office every weekend. Here are five movies about women’s empowerment to watch during Women’s History Month.

The Woman King

Set in the 1800s, “The Woman King” is based on a  troop of all-female warriors who possess abilities and ferocity unmatched by anything ever seen in the history of the world, in order to defend the African kingdom of Dahomey. Gen. Nanisca (Viola Davis) prepares the upcoming recruits to battle against a foreign foe who is out to destroy their way of life in response to a new threat.

Mulan

Disney turned their cartoon masterpiece into a live-action movie in 2020, starring Liu Yifei as Mulan. This remake, just like the original cartoon,  follows the story of a young girl who disguises herself as a man to keep her ailing father from serving in the Imperial Army. Mulan fearlessly faces off against northern invaders in China, and the remake features an all-authentic Asian cast. 

Little Women

Directed by Greta Gerwig, “Little Women” is a classic coming-of-age film highlighting societal challenges women in the 19th century faced, such as the need to marry well and live beneath the men they chose. This empowering story ultimately advocates that women should live by their own rules.

Homecoming

“Homecoming: A Film By Beyonce” exemplifies the motivation behind Beyonce’s iconic stage design: to honor the spirit of historically Black colleges and universities, to theatrically highlight the beauty of being Black in America, and to encourage anyone watching that they possess the capacity to achieve their most ambitious goals. The documentary was set in 2018 when Beyonce became the first Black woman to headline at Coachella. 

Hidden Figures

Based on an actual event, the movie “Hidden Figures” portrays the little-known account of how Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and Katherine G. Johnson, three Black mathematicians working for NASA in the early 1960s, collaborated to launch the country’s first astronaut into space. This film, which is inspiring, significant, and historically impactful, sheds light on the difficult war this trio had to wage to establish their legitimacy against primarily white male peers.
