On Monday, January 31, SXU guard, Joshua Evans, scored his 1,000th career point, as SXU men’s basketball beat Governors State University, 89-84 at the Shannon Center.
Evans became the 44th player in program history to hit this mark and was also the Cougar’s leading scorer of the night. Evans finished with 30 points in the game on an efficient 10 of 14 shooting from the field. Evans also contributed a total of five rebounds and two assists on the night as well.
The Cougars also got significant contributions from seniors, Jack Halverson, and Maurice Chambers. These two both managed to score in double figures as Halverson finished with 25 points, while Chambers added 18 points. Halverson also grabbed seven rebounds while Chambers was an incredibly efficient five of six from the field, and a perfect six for six from the free throw line.
Performances like these helped the Cougars produce their best offensive output of the season thus far. 89 points is the most the team has scored all year, and the team as a whole shot 65.3% from the field. The Cougars even shot 56.3% from three and 76.2% from the line, so it’s safe to say everything was working for them on offense that night.
Although this game was only decided by five points, the Cougars were in control for almost the entire game. The Cougars got their first lead just four minutes into the first half and would successfully hold onto it for the rest of the game. The Cougars biggest lead of the game was 13 points, and they maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half.
With this victory,, the Cougars record is now 12-10 on the year and 9-5 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play as well. This win also gives the Cougars a three-game winning streak, so the team is getting hot as the season starts to wind down. The Cougars will hope to keep this momentum going as there are just eight games left before the CCAC conference tournament starts up later this month.
