If there’s anything I’m currently looking forward to, it’s got to be autumn, and Fortnite: season six. Admittedly, I wasn’t impressed by season five’s Battle Pass, which lead me to make the conscientious decision to save my money for a Season that would make me feel guilt-free. While season five’s all-terrain carts, new locations, and rifts were exciting, season six is a game changer by far.
There are so many things to look forward to; Epic Games has given us all treat and no tricks. Introducing season six, you’re welcomed by a dazzling cut-scene. Epic deserves a round of applause for the life-like expressions on the faces of their cartoony, stylized characters.
Through this cutscene, gamers are alerted about the madness that is yet to come: the island in the center of Loot Lake is levitating! The mysterious cube that we once knew as an eerie, stagnant landmark now resides underneath this island, causing it to hover and migrate throughout the map. Players have tons of fun diving around the whirlwind that engulfs the floating island. It has now become a hotspot for Battle Royale chaos (Titled Towers who?)
There are plenty new exciting locations and additions to the overall map. For instance, a monumental haunted mansion has been added to our beloved Haunted Hills. This thrilling addition gives potential of more loot in the area.
The inclusion of the tall crops to Fatal Fields has to be one of the most subtle, yet perturbing modifications on the map. As a Fornite player, you are always aware of your surroundings, using your sight and hearing to look out for opponents. When you walk through the crops, it’s unnerving because you can’t see anything beyond the seemingly endless and claustrophobic field. However, you can use this feature to your advantage, as a way to sneak up on your opponent.
Wailing Woods has always been eerie, but it has become more mysterious due to its new underground bunker beneath the maze. Be sure to visit this bunker and the new cottages that have secret basements.
As soon as I viewed the new skins for the Battle Pass, I was immediately won over. The skins “DJ Yonder”, “Calamity”, “Dusk”, and “Dire” are absolutely chilling. I’ll be focused on building up “Calamity”’s skin, as she’s the first female character to have progressive styles. I’m absolutely infatuated with her development, as the final stage of her skin is serving female-Helsing, wild-west vibes.
The cutest features of the Battle Pass have to be the pets for your backpacks. You can unlock three pets: Bonesy the dog, Scales the Dragon, and Camo the Chameleon. Not only can they be your adorable new companions, but they come with engaging animations: Bonesy growls when shooting at an enemy, and Camo copies the color of any item that you obtain.
Any other minor updates to the game are quirky, even if they aren’t major highlights. The fact that we can now throw a tomato at another player is comical. And if you haven’t noticed, the Easter Island heads are gone. Epic’s attention to detail is admirable.
Epic Games’ ambition when it comes to introducing new things is respectable; they certainly know how to keep Fornite enthusiasts hooked. In Season four, we indulged in gravity crystals, which allowed us to leap higher than ever with no fall-damage, and made it easier to leap through open areas. This time, Epic introduced “shadow stones” (which have been disabled temporarily due to technical issues), which brought back some nostalgia of the gravity crystals.
These stones are small versions of the large cube. Once you equip a stone, you basically become a ghostly, transparent figure that can swiftly maneuver and pass through objects. However, not only are you defenseless in this state, you are also vulnerable to being killed. Perhaps Epic can revise this ability for a more balanced experience.
Ultimately, I am eager to indulge in season six, as it’s my favorite by far. Epic Games continues to astound everyone, making it hard to leave the game behind. There are always new adventures and electrifying opportunities to be had in Fortnite: Battle Royale.
