Congratulations!!! Welcome to Via, and to Saint Xavier University (SXU). You’re going to hear this a lot, but we are really happy that you have chosen to come to SXU.
As you enter your first semester at SXU, it’s important to make the most out of your college experience as you begin to encounter the new chapters of your life. These are the years in which you will begin to discover who you really are, so be sure to make them count!
College life comes with many different challenges, such as making new friends and maintaining a social life, on top of figuring out the career path you wish to take.
It may be stressful to put yourself out there, however exposing yourself to certain environments can help lessen the anxiety that comes with attending a new school, especially college. Each member of the editorial board can attest to this.
As one one editorial member mentioned growing up for them was moving from place to place, switching schools rapidly. By doing so, they’ve learned one thing about starting a new school, voices an editorial board member,
“It’s not as scary as it may seem. Everyone is just trying to get through and find themselves just as you are.”
Becoming familiar with your community holds a large impact on your college experience as well. Since SXU is a smaller campus, it makes the process of meeting new people much easier. It additionally create an opportunity to form bods and shapes a friendlier environment.
Everyone is a part of a community, whether it be your neighborhood, friend groups, or families. We are simply asking you become a part our ours.
Community is the heart and soul of any school.
Joining clubs/organizations and finding opportunities to be social with peers can help you introduce yourself, improve social skills, and make connections/friendships. some everlasting.
Finding a club also helps color a student’s college experience. It’s easy to find yourself bored once classes and work are done.
Though, by having somewhere to go outside of work, college can go from being a burden to a memorable experience.
We have found our community within the Xavierite. It’s not your job to find yours. Whether it be nursing, sports, or writing like us!
One member of the editorial board shares, “By joining the Xavierite, I became a more social person and involved with the community around me. In high school, I was a quieter person and very shy. But, since I’ve joined, I have been less anxious in social settings and enjoy myself more often.”
Saint Xavier’s clubs/organizations plan events pretty frequently. They are usually created for student enjoyment or educational purposes. SXU doesn’t shy away from students having a fun time outside of their studies and classes. Attending events and enjoying yourself is crucial to participate in during your time as a student to distress and socialize.
“Campus events and clubs are always willing to reach out to students. Everyone is always friendly and generally just wants to be there for you. Enjoy the fact that everyone’s down to Earth. Most college don’t five you that experience,” voices an editorial board member.
Being involved may also benefit your resume by listing experiences and leadership roles, ensuring a hiring manager of your hard work ethics and responsibilities. These experiences can show you are a good candidate for hire and additionally forming connections aiding you in attaining a jobs in your desired field.
If you have an undecided-major, being involved may also help you find your sought out passion. “Many students start college filled with fear of the unknown. Not knowing where you want to be in 10 years is a part of growing up. College is all about trying new things and finding the best fit for you and your future,” explains an editorial member.
The more you explore and step out of your comfort zone, you learn beyond the classroom. There are some skills that can only be learned through experience, like interacting with your community.
Getting acquainted with the student body, and even your professors makes your college experience run more smoothly.
An editorial member mentions, “Students are the blood of this university, and all other schools. By creating bonds, exploring and forming a community you and the members of said community begin to take ownership of your institution, and improve the experience for your and those around you.”
Regardless of what path you choose, the board hopes that all incoming first-year students have an amazing first year of college, and we hope that you find your place here at SXU.
