“Stop the count” is a phrase that was being chanted by Trump supporters on November 4th at vote-counting centers in Phoenix and Detroit, according to the Chicago Tribune. President Trump had also been tweeting this phrase a lot on his Twitter account.
There are several issues with Trump and his supporters insisting that they stop counting the votes. First of all, the United States of America is a federal constitutional representative democracy. This means that we the people of the United States hold political power, and we also have elected representatives exercising political power as well. For President Trump to be demanding that votes stop being counted is ridiculous considering the US has always supposed to have been a country where everyone has a right to vote and a right to be heard. Trump and his supporters are trying to silence the American people and take away that right. Every vote should be counted in order to ensure that whoever wins the election has been rightfully chosen by the American people.
I also have an issue with this because let’s face it, Donald Trump would not be insisting that the votes stop being counted if he were in the lead. As of November 5th, Biden was in the lead. Trump and his supporters are basically throwing a temper tantrum since things are not going the way they planned. Throughout Trump’s whole campaign, he has been telling voters, specifically his supporters, that mail-in voting is not reliable. Trump insisted that his voters go out on election day to cast their votes. Now that the votes were being counted, Trump was saying that it’s suspicious that the majority of the mail in ballots are for Biden. Trump should not be surprised that the mail-in ballots were going towards Biden since he literally told his supporters to not vote by mail.
This election was super close in numbers and I believe that was making Trump nervous. Trump was trying to do everything in his power in order to ensure that Biden did not get the 270 electoral votes. It is just really disheartening to see Trump and his supporters trying to silence the American people and their votes. Trump had even attempted to file lawsuits against different states for fraud. While Trump was attempting to silence the voters, Biden on the other hand remained calm and reassuring to the American people that every vote would be counted.
While this election was very intense as most would agree, it is important for every vote to be counted no matter the outcome. By attempting to silence the American people, it can be seen that Donald Trump is a threat to democracy. During a conference Trump gave on the evening of November 5th, he also mentioned that he would go to the Supreme Court if need be. This is dangerous seeing as how he appointed Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court and the republicans now have a 6 to 3 majority. Any case given to the Supreme Court is likely to vote in Trump’s favor. It is wrong for Trump to want to beat the system by using the Supreme Court, but at the end of the day the voice of the American people will prevail.
