On November 23, 1963, the world of television was changed forever as the human race was introduced to the Doctor, an alien from the planet Gallifrey who travels all of time and space in a blue police box.
Almost fifty years later, the Time Lord is still exploring the universe while fighting monsters, both alien and human.
This Saturday, November 23 (exactly 50 years from the first episode), on BBC at 7:50 p.m. simultaneously in over 75 different countries.
There will be at least three different incarnations of the Doctor interacting with each other during the episode, although we are not sure why or how this will happen. Finally fans will be able to see the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) alongside the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith), the most current incarnation of the Time Lord. They will also be joined by the War Doctor (John Hurt), who was introduced in the last episode of season seven, “The Name of the Doctor.”
A few days ago, more information about Hurt’s Doctor was released. A short, seven minute mini-episode titled “The Night of the Doctor” showed the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) reincarnate into Hurt’s Doctor, who was named the “War Doctor” in the end credits of the episode.
This episode was a really big deal in the Doctor Who community because since the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccelston) was introduced in 2005, fans have tried to speculate how the Eighth Doctor regenerated.
Personally, I’m happy to finally know why, when, and how Eight turned into Nine. Sadly, I’ll never get my answer to that since it didn’t happen, but at least I will know why McGann’s Doctor isn’t around anymore.
Joining the Doctor(s) are Clara (Jenna Louise-Coleman) and Rose Tyler (Billie Piper). Coleman is currently on the show, but Tyler will be returning to the show for the first time since 2008.
Rose was companion to the Ninth and Tenth Doctors, but now it appears as though she may be companion to the War Doctor.
Rose was always quite fashionable and trendy, but her outfit for the upcoming special is something much more rough-and-tumble, worn, and less stylish.
Promotional pictures also show her with a ring on her left ring finger, and all of the pictures of her are either by herself or with the War Doctor.
This leads me to believe that we may not be getting the Rose Tyler from our universe (or even Pete’s universe), but Rose unlike any we have ever known.
The most recent development in the Anniversary celebrations is the Children in Need short, which was only about two minutes long but included a big plot twist.
The Eleventh Doctor is investigating some shenanigans in an art gallery, when suddenly he (and his fez) are whisked away through a portal.
The short ended with the Tenth Doctor picking up Eleven’s fez and putting it on his head.
At that moment, my inner fangirl jumped for joy and then began weeping tears of happiness.
Things are starting to get serious, guys. Ten and Eleven have finally met, we know where the War Doctor fits into the picture and Rose Tyler is wearing a wedding ring.
There are only a few days left until “The Day of the Doctor,” and I can hardly contain my excitement.
I’m already charging up my sonic screwdriver and fluffing my hair in preparation. All I need now is fish fingers and custard and I’ll be ready.
