On Friday, Oct. 17, Saint Xavier University’s own Unidos will be hosting a dance at the Res Center located in Regina Hall at 8 p.m.

The dance, open to all Saint Xavier students and their friends, will consist of dancing the night away (or at least until midnight) with a DJ. Snacks and drinks will also be provided.

“The dance is a celebration for the students to close Hispanic Heritage Month,” Reyes stated.

Hispanic Heritage Month, a national event spanning from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, recognizes and honors the efforts contributed by the Latino community in our society.

Saint Xavier University has held a variety of events and activities in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, including lectures, field trips, and even dance lessons with Unidos.

However, according to Reyes, there was a lower outcome of students in attendance to these events than she would have liked.

“We did have some activities throughout September and October, but not a lot of people actually know of the events going on around campus,” Reyes said, “so advertising this dance was kind of aimed at the students and getting them more involved on campus with the organization and becoming aware of the Latin American community.”

Along with the students having fun at this event and socializing with other people, the Unidos club aims to get Saint Xavier students aware of exactly just what they are celebrating about, as the dance signifies the end of Hispanic Heritage Month.

“We really want to engage students in the Latino community and to expand definitely to get a maximum outcome, and also get them aware of the Latin American culture,” Reyes said.

When asked of his opinion of what the dance has to offer, Unidos president Miguel Esquinca said, “This is the third time we’ve held this program, and it’s honestly one of the best programs here because it has a wide variety of music not only from Latin America, but also from the United States. And it’s not jsut for students, it’s open for everyone: commuters, residents, or the public.”

Students of Saint Xavier are encouraged to come and attend this dance not only to bring an end to Hispanic Heritage Month, but also to be able to come out and enjoy an example of the kind of celebrations Saint Xavier University has to offer.

There will be Unidos members also adverstising the dance and the Unidos club at the diner throughout the week of Oct. 13.
