Dance Team Places Fourth

On Friday, January 29, the Saint Xavier dance team competed in the Missouri Baptist University Spartan Showcase. The Cougars would fare well in this competition, placing in fourth out of six teams.

In this competition, the Cougars’ fate would be determined by just two judges who were judging the entire field of dancers. The first judge scored the Cougars’ routine an 89.5, good enough to place them in third behind only Stephens and Saint Ambrose.

The second judge would score the Cougars’ routine an even 90, giving the Cougars a combined score of 179.5 and a mean score of 89.75. Both of those scores would place the Cougars in fourth place, and just outside of the top three teams in the competition.

Those top three teams would end up being Saint Ambrose, who finished in first with scores of 202 and 100.9, Stephens, who finished in second with scores of 194.6 and 97.25, and Lindenwood, who finished in third with scores of 183.8 and 91.8.

The Cougars would have to build upon this success in short order, as they would have another competition the very next day. On Saturday, January 30, the Saint Xavier dance team competed in the Lindenwood-Belleville Classic.

The Cougars would once again place in fourth, this time though there were eight teams in the competition. In this competition, three judges were responsible for scoring all eight teams’ performances. The first judge scored the Cougars’ performance 103.5, putting them in a tie for third with host school LU-Belleville.

The second judge would not be as kind to the Cougars, giving the Cougars a 95.5 and dropping them into fourth place. With the Cougars’ spot in the rankings hanging in the balance, they had to be disappointed when the third judge would give them an even lower score than the second judge, an 88.75.

Overall, the judges combined score totaled 287.5 with a mean score of 95.82, both of which was good enough to put them in fourth place out of eight teams. They would finish behind Saint Ambrose, who finished with the highest score at 105.22, Baker University, who would finish in second with a score of 104.17, and LU-Belleville, who would finish in third with a score of 99.7.

The Cougars will dance their way to the NAIA National Qualifiers in Adrian, Michigan on February 27. Depending on the results of that tournament, the Cougars may be heading to the national competition in Davenport, Iowa this upcoming March.
