If you look at the news, you will see several different articles about the COVID-19. This virus started in Wu Han, China. A few months ago, the virus was rapidly spreading in China, but the spread of the virus has steadily decreased there. Europe has become the epicenter of this pandemic. As the spread of COVID-19 slowly decreases in China, it is increasing in other places.

The virus is spreading fast in other countries. Coronavirus has been reported in Africa, North and South America, Europe, Asia, and the Western Pacific areas. As more cases of coronavirus are spreading, fear and panic are spreading with it. This panic has caused many businesses to shut down, but now big events are also being halted due to the virus.

Public gatherings have been put to a halt. For example, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade was canceled in New York and Chicago. The NBA and Major League Soccer have suspended their seasons. The NCAA has canceled the Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments. It is also recommended that Church gatherings are halted. Big music festivals like Coachella are also being stopped in fear that the COVID-19 might spread to multiple people during these gatherings.

Before, only Asian businesses were negatively affected by the spread of the virus, but now people are scared of going out at all. People probably think it is safer to eat in rather than eating out. I work at Panera Bread and the number of customers that come and eat there has significantly decreased. Our rush hours are not really rush hours anymore, delivery orders have increased, and sales are decreasing by the day. We also had to make a major change in how we give out our cups in order to make things more sanitary and safer for our customers.

On top of businesses being affected, a lot of schools, colleges, high schools, and universities, have also closed down for the rest of the semester and resorted to doing online lectures to prevent the spread of the virus on campuses.

A lot of people are saying that closing everything down is an overreaction to the virus, but I believe canceling events and closing down businesses is the correct solution to preventing the virus. I do not understand why people think it is an overreaction since this virus has no cure to it yet.

Although more people have died from Ebola and the flu, these illnesses have not spread as much as the COVID-19. The COVID-19 is still spreading and mutating as we speak. Even if they find a cure, a mutated version could form and we would need to find a new cure.

Right now, the most important thing we can do is to stop the spreading by reducing large gatherings as much as possible. If a person who has the COVID-19 sneezes or coughs and the droplets from their sneeze or cough touches you, you will be infected with the virus. It is safer to have minimal contact with others in public so the virus does not spread any more than it already has.
