On Thursday, April 14, The Saint Xavier men’s baseball team won a home game against the Indiana South Bend Titans by a score 17-13.
Despite the high score of this game, most of the runs were scored within two innings. The Cougars had built a 14-0 lead after the first three innings, and it seemed like the team was going to cruise to an easy victory. The Titans would come back with a major response by scoring 12 runs in the fourth inning alone. Although both teams looked unstoppable early, only four more runs would be scored in the final three innings and SXU would end up with the victory.
Of course, scoring 17 runs throughout the game means it was a big day for many in the Cougars’ box score. The men’s team managed to hit four homeruns in the game, and shortstop—Declan Smyth—went deep twice in the game as well. The biggest overall contributor for SXU, was first baseman, Patrick Doran, who ended up with three hits, 4 RBIs and three runs scored.
While this game was supposed to be a part of a doubleheader, the second game unfortunately had to be suspended due to darkness. Both teams are currently tied 15-15 in the top of the sixth inning, and no continuation date has been announced at this time.
With this split, the Cougars record is now 30-9, and they are now 13-4 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC). SXU still has the third spot in the CCAC, and they still have four series against conference opponents before the regular season ends.
The Cougars’ next game is on Friday, April 22, where they start a three games series against the Trinity Christian College Trolls. This first game will be played at Ferrell Field with a 3:00 p.m. start time.
