Cougars win a tight one versus Saint Ambrose: Display dominate performance against St. Joseph

The Saint Xavier University women’s basketball team faced Saint Ambrose University on Wednesday, February 1 at the Lee Lohman Arena in Davenport, Iowa.

It was a tight game, but the Cougars came out victorious with a final score of 79-70, moving SXU’s season record to 17-6.

SXU had multiple double-digit scorers, but sophomore guard Aaliyahna Derrell led the way for the Cougars. Derrell finished the game with nineteen points, seven assists, and four rebounds in thirty-six minutes of play shooting 5-10 from the floor. 

Other notable scorers were senior guard Alyssa Streeter, (16 points), senior guard Maia Fawcett (13 points), and senior forward Claire Austin (10 points). 

Sophomore forward Sofie Carr provided a spark off the bench by providing eleven points. 

SXU’s defense was solid that night as they forced Saint Ambrose to 25 turnovers and six blocks. The Cougars also came away with thirteen steals as sophomore guard Jenna Hernandez alone collected four. 

The Cougars shot 45% from the floor (27-60) and 36% from three-point land (9-25). They shot well overall and also knocked down big shots in the final stretch.  

SXU came out with energy as always and the full-court press. The two teams went back and forth for the first three quarters. SXU took control in the fourth quarter as they outscored Saint Ambrose twenty-seven to nineteen.

They were able to outplay Saint Ambrose in the fourth to close out the game and come out with a huge win. 

The Cougars then took a trip to Whiting, Indiana to match up against St. Joseph on Saturday, February 3 as they continued their road trip. 

Saint Xavier won in ‌dominating fashion as they recorded a 97-44 score to move the team to an 18-6 record. 

By scoring 97 points, they tallied the most points in a single game this season and the second-fewest points allowed.

The Cougars came out of the gate firing on all cylinders and bringing energy as they always do. 

That energy gave them a twenty-eight to ten lead by the end of the first quarter.

SXU was efficient in the first quarter as they shot 55% on twenty attempts and 11 makes.

The Cougars came out firing and did not look back. 

Sophomore center Alyssa Crenshaw guided the way in scoring as she concluded the game with a double-double, twenty-one points, ten rebounds, and three steals. 

Freshman guard Jaidn Green was second in scoring for the Cougars as she tallied up fourteen points and three rebounds.

Saint Xavier attempted eighty shots from the floor and netted thirty-seven of them, leaving them at around 46.3%. 

From three-point range, they shot 34.6% (9-26).

SXU’s defense led St. Joseph to twenty-four turnovers, and they also came up with twelve blocks. 

The Cougars completely out-rebounded St. Joseph; they had the boards under control as SXU collected fifty-nine versus St. Joseph’s twenty-seven. 

Saint Xavier took control of the game from ‌the get-go, and they were able to have a dominating performance to secure the win. 

SXU will travel to Chicago State University on Wednesday, February 8 as they hope to extend their five-game winning streak.
