Cougars lose a close one to Indiana South Bend; suffer a hard defeat against St. Francis

The Saint Xavier University Women’s Basketball team was defeated by Indiana South Bend on their home court at the Shannon Center on Wednesday, January 11. 

This loss meant that the cougar’s seven-game winning streak came to an end.  

It was a close game versus Indiana, but SXU didn’t have enough at the end, with a final score of 73-65. 

Senior forward, Claire Austin, led the way for the Cougars She ended us with a stat line of 15 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks. She shot 55% from the field, going 5-9. 

Senior guard, Maia Fawcett, was the second-leading scorer with 12 points, two assists, and two rebounds. She attempted six shots from the floor and connected with four of them, giving her a 67% shooting percentage on the night.

SXU shot 40.4% from the field, making 23 of 57 attempted shots. 

Their 3-point shooting was not the best as they just shot 23.8% from downtown, only connecting on five of 21 shots.

It was a back-and-forth game for both teams, they were going at each other at the end, bucket after bucket, but SXU couldn’t close it off. 

The Cougars didn’t have the best second quarter and that was the quarter that defined the game at the end. SXU was dominated by second chance points which ended 21 to seven. 

The Cougars were looking to bounce back on Saturday, January 14th at St. Francis. 

Saint Xavier took on St Francis in Joliet and suffered a heavy defeat on Saturday, January 14. 

The final score ended 50-91 in favor of St. Francis as SXU couldn’t get their offense going. 

Saint Xavier University’s women’s basketball team did not have a good shooting performance which was a big factor today. They shot just 30.4% in total for this game, 17-56. 

From behind the arc, SXU shot 26.3%, connecting on only five of 19 shots.

Austin was SXU’s leading scorer along with sophomore guard, Aaliyahna Derrell, right behind her. 

Austin ended up with 13 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Derrell finished with 12 points and three assists.

SXU once again couldn’t get their offense going, although they had a good first quarter, scoring 17 points. They were down 17-23 at the end of the first. 

The second quarter was poor for the Cougars as they only racked up seven points. The game escaped from them in the second quarter and fell into the Fighting Saints’ lap. 

SXU came out of the half and played well in the third quarter, scoring 20 points. But the fourth quarter was poor for them as well, they were outscored by 21 points, only tallying seven points. 

The Cougars created good opportunities but ultimately couldn’t get anything going for themselves. SXU has a good-flowing offense, but they have to hit their shots.
