Congrats to Bob Hallberg

“Your whole life is a mystery and you never know where it’s going to take you,” are the words of Bob Hallberg, the women’s basketball coach here at St. Xavier University.

Last Wednesday, Coach Hallberg was honored with having the new basketball court in the Shannon Center named after him, as well as a scholarship.

Hallberg’s statement of the mysteries of life is apt considering the interesting and intersecting turns and twists that can be found in the journey of life that Coach Hallberg has led.

According to the news article “Athletic Director Bob Hallberg Honored” by Catlyn Hicks, Hallberg’s career is one that has gone all around the city of Chicago. He began working in at Kennedy High School as a basketball coach at the age of 27.

He then came to what was then St. Xavier College in 1971 to coach the men’s high school program.

After six years of coaching at St. Xavier College, Hallberg coached at both Chicago State University and the University of Chicago.

But, he returned to St. Xavier – which in his absence became St. Xavier University – in 1999 and was one of the innovators that helped create our women’s basketball program.

Since then, Hallberg has been coach of the women’s basketball team as well as serving as the athletic director – over-seeing 14 athletic program.

We at The Xavierite would like to congratulate Coach Hallberg on his well-earned scholarship and court dedication.

It’s admirable to see such dedication to the university.

With a combined total of 20 years of dedication to his field – and 20 good years at that. Coach Hallberg’s overall record with the women’s basketball program stands at, according to Catlyn Hicks’s article, 329-101 (.765).

There is something to be said for creating a legacy at a particular institution.

Dedication creates stability and for 14 consecutive years now, Coach Hallberg has provided numerous college athletes with the stability that they need to succeed in in a supremely demanding environment with little room for error.

For one sport that would be difficult enough, but to oversee 14 other sports related to our school – now that is one heck of a juggling act.

Of course, Bob Hallberg’s career at SXU is beyond an admirable accomplishment, but Coach Hallberg is just one example of the many educators that can be found at our school.

Simply because they do not serve as a director of a program or are as visible as a noted athletic coach that does not mean that they are not out there.

Coach Hallberg, like many professors and staff members of SXU’s faculty, has shown incredible dedication to his craft of instructing athletes as well as facilitating the many ins and outs of countless other athletes that may have not had direct contact with Hallberg.

While we at The Xavierite wish that all dedicated members of the school’s faculty and staff could receive the same sort of acknowledgement, we offer our sincerest congratulations to Coach Bob Hallberg and wish him good luck in his future endeavors in upcoming seasons and any ventures in the coming semesters.
