Personally, the way that I study, I need complete silence. I need no distractions, a desktop area, a pencil pouch full of highlighters and colorful pens, and a pile of scratch paper. Maybe it’s just me, but I am extremely picky about my studying environment. Particularly because I know what works for me and I see no point in attempting to find a better routine.
Ideally, my favorite spot to study on campus is the library. That’s a no brainer. I mean, just looking at the beautiful stained glass windows relaxes me. The library gives me exactly the kind of environment I need to be productive and get things done.
Unless of course there are those students that won’t be quiet. Libraries are meant to be quiet and peaceful. Nothing ruffles my feathers more than those kids that confuse the library and the diner. Laughing, talking, gossiping, flirting— the list goes on.
I get it, after being in the library so long you need to talk, but why not just leave? Why not just go to any other spot on campus to do those things? Why do it while the stressed out biology major with a never-ending list of things to do is sitting right behind you? Or the student studying for their exam? Or the student who has a lot of reading to do? Or any other student that actually uses the library for what it’s for?
I get tired of shushing people. If you decide to come to the library, please use it for it’s purpose. The library is literally the only place on campus that requires you to keep quiet. It is extremely frustrating when I feel like I can’t focus or study in the library.
So please, if you are one of those people that needs to talk constantly, avoid the library like the floor is made of lava. Be respectful of the other students in there attempting to get things done.
The study rooms are there for study groups, utilize them. The student lounge is there for students to interact with each other while they do their homework or study. Coffee Cats is also a good place to casually talk and multitask if need be. Did I mention the Scholar’s Den? The Bishop Quarter Room? Starbucks?
For my sanity, and the sanity of every other student attempting to use the library for it’s intended purpose, please just keep the talking to a bare minimum. The students of SXU and I thank you for your cooperation.
